Simon Lane gets recognised for his volunteer work with many of the local schools... NEWS RELEASE 13 December 2006 NATIONAL AWARD FOR SOMERSET BUSINESS A businessman from Wellington has gained national recognition for his work in training the entrepreneurs of tomorrow. Simon Lane, who runs a company in Wellington, has won the prestigious npower Business Volunteering Award 2006 in a competition organised by the national Education Business Partnership. The awards are designed to recognise business leaders who give up their time voluntarily to forge closer links between industry and education. Simon Lane has spent the past 17 years working with many of the schools in Somerset and has been a formal business partner for the last 2 years with the Somerset Education Business Partnership, visiting schools throughout the county. He is currently a business partner with Heathfield, Ladymead and Bishop Fox’s schools in Taunton and is a frequent visitor, giving presentations, helping out with Young Enterprise projects, running mock job interviews and taking part in business field trips. Today he said: “When I was at school no-one really prepared us for the real world of business and I think it is so important for these young people. They are the future of business in this country – if we don’t help them who will?” Speaking about the national award, he said: “It was a real surprise to me. I didn’t even know I had been entered by Somerset EBP. To be shortlisted and go to a gala dinner in London and then hear your name read out, it was a great honour.” John Crew, Managing Director of Somerset Education Business Partnership, said: “Simon gives up a great deal of his time for nothing to help young people plan for their future outside of school. “He has great energy and enthusiasm and is a real ambassador for Somerset business. The award is greatly deserved.”
